An Online Source of Community for Single Mom Families & Friends
Welcome to One Mom Magazine!
We created One Mom as a hub of information, inspiration, community and discounts for people who identify as single mothers. So much good can happen when we work together.
For starters, single moms can join our network and receive the the One Mom card (OMCard) to get discounts on all sorts of goods and services for themselves and their children. OMCard Business Partners understand that we single moms could use a boost and they offer us the same discounts they give to students, seniors, veterans, and teachers.

A Single Mom’s Journey to Becoming a Teacher, Homeschooler & Mompreneur
By Ashley Blas

I recently interviewed Bethany Wire, an English teacher and single mom to nine-year-old Rosie. Last year, Bethany decided to begin homeschooling Rosie, and has been building a curriculum tailored specifically to her strengths and creativity. But her work doesn’t stop there. Bethany is also the founder of “Four Generation Crafters,” a jewelry business she runs with Rosie that honors their Eastern Band Cherokee heritage. Together, this mother-daughter duo is showing what it looks like to take the path less traveled.
Ashley: What brought you to the decision to homeschool your daughter, Rosie?
Last winter, Rosie began struggling with classic ADHD symptoms–disorganization, trouble starting assignments, and missing deadlines–and her dyslexia made reading feel like a constant uphill battle, which started to affect her confidence and desire to learn. I tried to set up an Individualized Education Plan (IEP) or 504 plan through the public school system, but due to holiday breaks, illnesses and staffing turnover in the special education department, we weren’t able to complete the process on time. I made the difficult decision to reduce my teaching hours and begin homeschooling Rosie.
I tried to set up an Individualized Education Plan (IEP) or 504 plan through the public school system, but due to holiday breaks, illnesses and staffing turnover in the special education department, the process became too frustrating and I made the difficult decision to reduce my teaching hours and begin homeschooling Rosie.
Now, we do school together each morning. I've been able to tailor her education to her needs—strategies that don’t just help her succeed academically, but also build habits that will serve her for life.
Ashley: What was the process like for creating a new learning environment for Rosie?
To a certain extent, I wanted to emulate a real classroom as much as I could. I got Rosie a desk, some posters, and supplies to make the space feel separate from the rest of the house. This has really helped her stay focused and make the conscious switch between “home” and “school.”
One of the benefits of homeschooling, though, is that I can change up our environment. If it’s a nice day outside, we’re able to do our lessons in the backyard. That flexibility has been great for Rosie, since it keeps her from getting bored sitting at the same desk all day, and it helps break up lessons so each one feels like a new part of the day instead of everything blending together.
Ashley: How has your personal experience shaped the way you homeschool Rosie?
Rosie and I both have ADHD and dyslexia. I wasn’t diagnosed with ADHD until my senior year of high school, and I didn’t find out I had dyslexia until college. Looking back, the signs were always there–I just didn’t have the right support to understand what was going on.
With Rosie, I noticed the signs early. When I took her for a full evaluation, the diagnoses helped everything click. Rosie isn’t the kind of kid who can sit still for long periods or follow a rigid routine, but she’s very bright, creative, and totally capable when given the right support. I knew I had to build a learning environment that worked for her. CONTINUED IN PROFILES
