CULTURE: Aesthetics by Nzinga Temu
There are many different kinds of fashion and aesthetics, and with the internet being so popular, it’s really easy to find different styles that you like. These are some styles that I’ve found were popular recently. Take the poll on the Home Page after reading to choose your favorite one.
Grunge
Grunge fashion is a slightly alternative style of dress. Although less mainstream, it’s still attractive and in fashion. It includes a lot of black, flannels, ripped jeans, oversized t-shirts and jean jackets, black leather, heavy black boots, and more black. It brings really edgy vibes, and it wouldn’t be strange to apply to a skater look, though it’s not to be confused with goth or emo fashion. It may be a lot of black, but it brings more of a street aspect to the black-on-black aesthetic. You can and should look to mostly thrift shops for this look.
90’s
90’s fashion is a throwback for many, but not for all of us in high school. It’s very colorful, leather jackets, block color sweaters and t-shirts, and baggy/mom jeans. It’s recently become more popular as nostalgia started being something people like to relate to. The fashion itself is fun and a little bit dorky, but always cool to rock. You can look to thrift and consignment, but since new and bright is a lot of this style’s point, some new things like jeans and t-shirts can be bought too.
Pastel
The pastel aesthetic is something that sprouted from the internet. It refer to any pastel color, but pink is the most popular. It’s uncommon to see anyone actually wearing this style outside of a social media fashion shoot, and if done wrong can possibly look a little goofy. But the style itself is fun and fashionable. It’s comprised of all soft colors and clothes. Soft pink oversized sweaters, white pleated skirts, color block t-shirts, very light jeans, pink dad hats, and anything else that is cute and pastel colored. “Pastel” leaves a lot to interpretation, so the best way to go for this style is to just wear all the same light color in the cutest way possible. You can find this style in pretty much any store (except for maybe Hot Topic). This style is not to be confused with pastel goth, which is a slightly different aesthetic.
Nerdy
Nerd fashion is very simple, but not simple enough that you can slap on some wide rimmed glasses and call yourself a “nerd”, okay don’t do that. Nerd fashion is a style that rebels against the modern mainstream’s ripped jeans and worn t-shirts. Nerdy fashion is almost old fashioned looking, with bowties, suspenders, white button downs, cardigans, and yes, the iconic nerdy glasses. For this style, shop in stores that you think that only moms shop in, like Macy’s.
Business Casual
Those intimidating, magical people who show up to school with pressed clothes and glossy shoes, that’s a style. They show up to school, on dress code and ready for an interview. It’s an easy style to achieve (on a weekend, not with a 5am bus schedule). The style includes nude and neutral colors, light makeup and clean cut. Things like pencil skirts, dresses, slacks. Ties and dress shoes are a little too much for this look.
