How to budget money for teens
Jayline Torres 6/18
Money money money. Doesn't everyone love money, especially teenagers? When is there not a teenager asking their parents for money or asking one of their family members for money? Every teenager loves to have money in their pocket for either when they go shopping or go out with their friends. But the thing that teenagers don't know how to do is budget their money the way they should. Teenagers always like to spend money on things that they shouldn't be getting. They see green paper and they don't know how to act with themselves. They always look at the things that they WANT instead of the things they NEED.
Budgeting money has a lot to do with maturity and the way you see things. Some teenagers see things differently. As a teenager, I see things from another perspective where I put the things I need first before the things I want. Something that you want can always wait until later for you to get it, unlike something that you need, which is a difference. Money isn't something that grows on trees, it's something that you or your parent/guardian work hard for to support you and make sure you're okay.
First and foremost, some teens worry about their friends, shoes, and what they want to have to look good. I understand that people have a right to wear what they want and to look nice, but it's also another thing when you buy unnecessary stuff when you should use that money on something else. College isn't even a word that pops up in some teens’ minds. Why? Because they think that they can become who they want without going to college.
College is very expensive for some people, especially if you are planning to go to a very good college and you don't have a scholarship or your scholarship does not provide for the full price. That’s something that I would say teenagers should start looking at now because it costs a lot of money. Money is a big reason why some teens don’t want to go to college. That's why budgeting is very important especially when you work. You should always take a certain percentage out of each paycheck and put it aside for college, so that way when the time comes you won't have to worry about looking for money. Maybe I’m too mature for my age and I think outside the box, but I feel like if there should be anything you should be worrying about it’s your priorities, and your first priority is college.
My mother always told me that sooner or later I’m going to have to be on my own and be independent. Let me get into a little more detail in case you don't understand. Many parents are of course always going to be there for you no matter what you go through. However, that doesn't mean that when you are an adult over 25 that they are going to be paying for your rent, bills, mortgage, and all the bills you have to handle. You will eventually have to do everything on your own and learn the hard way how to budget money.
I’m writing this so you can know that budgeting money and saving money is a very important thing. That way, in the future, you won't have problems doing it and you won't be stuck trying to find money for something that you NEED to do which is way more important than something that you WANT. It’s never too early to learn how to manage your money.
