Interview With Coop Alum Dana Terrace
By Alexis Mendyk Dana Terrace spoke with Visual Artists on Thursday, April 28 about how she started drawing and animating in school every day. Her first job was animating at JibJab. She dealt with many rejections until the team at the show Gravity Falls had her help out. Then she started working with Ducktales, Tangled, and now has created her own show, The Owl House. Dana led the artists in an activity where they were able to make their own story plot and adventures, along with their own characters. The group even learned from her how to do episode brainstorming. Q: How was it trying to get lgbtq+ characters into Disney shows?
A: With previous shows it was difficult to sneak lgbtq+ in the shows. I and the crew threw a fit and emailed the person in charge multiple times and within a week he apologized and allowed LGBTQ+. Q: How much feedback have you gotten from kids from the show? A: Some kids like the show, some don’t. That’s normal. Q: What is something you suggest I can do in the future for drawing and animating? A: Not going to an art school that specializes in animation is fine. It's okay, because art is one of those things you can do on your own. There are many tutorials. [When it comes to] story boarding, being able to draw everything and anything very fast is a must. Practice drawing--figure drawing, composition studies, along with studying old art, and practice comic composition. For writing, just write a lot. [Write] short stories; if you have some trusted friends just give it to them and say, "Here, what do you think?” And remember the difference between opinion and criticism. Q: How do you protect your work? A: That’s tricky, because the only way you can protect something is keep it hidden, but art and writing needs an audience. Q: Do you draw digitally or do you have a sketchbook? A: Both, I like to draw digitally and I always have a sketchbook to carry around with me. |
