Winterfest 2017: Behind the Scenes
Daniella Ruiz 12/17
The 2017 Winterfest dance concert was another great show, but this year was different from the rest. We were in a new environment and had more performances, but we were able to stay focused and leave our hearts on the stage.
Our environment this year changed from last year and the years before that. Instead of being at the Shubert, we performed at Coop. This made the experience much more hectic for the dancers than being at the Shubert because it was our first time trying it out. For example, there are no dressing rooms for the dancers so we got separated by grade level: the freshmen were in room N100 and the sophomores, juniors, and seniors were in the Black Box and, of course, the boys had their own room right near the stage. Our new environment allowed us to have more performances.
Because Coop is smaller than the Shubert, we had to perform three times to make sure everyone could make it to see their loved one dance. This was another adjustment  dancers had to make. We had a show at 6:30 on Wednesday and 2:30 and 6:00 shows on Thursday. Three shows gave the dancers a chance to do better or fix mistakes made in the previous show. Three shows also meant that we had to get dressed for each dance three times. This includes hair, make up, costumes, headpieces, and many other components.
As a junior class, we showed improvement from our last show and even freshmen show. There were little mistakes, but we were able to cover them up and not show the audience through our facial expressions. Overall, I'm proud of my class as individuals and as a unit. We were able to overcome our differences and made sure we behaved, looked, and performed as one.

The Dance Department as a whole did an amazing job. The freshmen's first performance went smoothly, as well as the show as a whole. Our dances were well put together by our talented teacher-choreographers. I'm proud of our department's determination and perseverance.
Can’t wait til the next show in the spring!
